Winter Protection Magic: Herbs, Amulets, and Easy Spells to Protect Yourself and Your Home

While the winter days are darker, slower, quieter, colder, we also find they are a time to gather with friends and family, to enjoy the warmth of company and the cheer of the winter season. It’s a season known both for being a season of joy and togetherness, as well as being a season of isolation and spiritual vulnerability. As opposing as these reputations are, one thing they share in common is the increased need for protective magic.

For many of us, the fact that an uptick in social gatherings also calls for an uptick in protective magic comes as no surprise. Few are those among us who can say they’re not at times in the company of those who don’t have our best interests at heart, those who may speak ill behind our backs or attempt to poison us with their negativity. And the dark winter season, notorious for the rise in spirit activity it brings with it, calls for protective magic to secure the home, cleans it of negative energy, and ward off any evils that may come our way.

Protective magic for the winter season doesn’t have to be complicated. Indeed, you’ll often find it’s much the opposite. There are many simple methods of magical protection that we can put to work this winter season, and some of them are things we already do without even knowing. In this piece, we’ll explore winter herbs and ingredients one can use in their winter protection magic, as well as a few easy ways to protect yourself and your space during this winter season. Let’s get started.

Herbs & ingredients

for winter protection spells:

Cinnamon: Cinnamon is known for its protective powers and can also be used in magic for good fortune and prosperity.

  • Burn cinnamon sticks or cinnamon incense to bring a protective energy to a space.

  • Include cinnamon sticks on wreaths to hang on your door to ward off negative energies and malevolent spirits, and to draw in good fortune.

  • Include cinnamon in your winter bakes to attract abundance and prosperity.

Holly:

  • Holly boughs can be included in winter decorations and used to ward off evil and protect from danger.

  • Holly also offers protection from hexes or witchcraft used against you, especially any illnesses wished upon you.

*Note – Real holly berries aren’t recommended for use in holiday decorations, as they can be dangerous for people and pets if ingested. Please read up on how to safely incorporate holly into your holidays here (Poison Control).

Mistletoe:

  • Mistletoe be hung in entryways or on your door or windows as a protective amulet.

  • Mistletoe can bring general protection to the home, as well as protection from magic used against you.

*Note – Mistletoe is considered poisonous and should be handled with care. For more information about the safety of mistletoe or what to do if you’ve ingested mistletoe, see here (Poison Control) and here (WebMD).

Pine: Pine brings protection but can also be used to cleanse and purify a space.

  • Burn pine incense to purify a space of negative energy and to promote emotional strength.

  • Burn pine incense after unwanted company has left to rid yourself of any negativity or ill will said company left behind.

  • Use a bundle or broom made of pine needles to sweep your threshold, the path leading to your home, or your porch to cleanse any negative energy that has passed there and to ward off visitors who would bring negativity into your home.

  • Pine oil can be applied topically to protect one from negative energy and ward off bad vibes.

Pinecone: Like pine wood and pine needles, pinecones can be used in protection spells, though they can also be used in magic to bring good luck, good health, and even fertility.

  • Hang pinecones from your door (or include them in a wreath for your door) to ward off evil.

  • Incorporate pinecones in your winter décor to attract good luck and prosperity.

  • Keeping a pinecone on one’s altar or in their magical workspace can promote positive and peaceful energy within that space, as well as protect that area, where we’re often laying ourselves bare and at our most vulnerable, from evil and negative energy.

Rosemary: Rosemary’s reputation as a protective agent spans across countless cultures around the world.

  • Rosemary can be used in incense and can be burned loose in a fire-safe pot or vessel (I recommend with the use of a charcoal disc and/or sand to absorb heat) or in bundles to cleanse a space of negativity as well as to fill protect a space and those within it.

  • Rosemary oil in the hair or on the skin can be applied to protect one’s energy from evil eye and maliciousness.

  • Rosemary can be used to protect against curses or hexes, to cleanse one of any magic used against them or any wishes of illness, injury, or suffering set against you by another. Because of this, rosemary is a popular herb included in protection charm bags.

  • Used in the home (burned, used in décor, used as a talisman, or used in cooking), rosemary also attracts peace and happiness.

Thistle:

  • Thistle can be burned to bring protective energy to a space.

  • Thistle can be used in protection charm bags or satchets.

  • Thistle can be dried and hung from windows or doorframes to ward off ill will or evil.

Easy Winter Protection MAGIC:

Oh, Christmas Tree. Oh, Christmas Tree:

What’s that? Christmas Trees / Winter Trees / Yule Bushes / Ёлка (Yolka) can be used in protection magic? Yes, they absolutely can. For those who use a real tree, different trees can promote different energies. For protection, pine and fir trees can be used. Pine will also cleanse a space of negativity, while fir is said to also promote renewal, strength, and good health.

Furthermore, any tree can be decked out in protective talismans as decorations, such as pinecones or holly (many avoid using holly berries as they are poisonous to people and pets and should never be included in households with children or animals who may be able to access or eat the berries; read more about how to safely use holly here).

Fireplace Protection Magic:

Fire itself is known for having powerful purifying and protective energy. Adding a little something to your fireplace this winter can boost the protective magic even more.

  • Cinnamon sticks added to your fireplace will not only bring protection but get ready for all the cozy winter vibes the scent will bring.

  • You can add a little rosemary (or a rosemary bundle) to your fireplace for some mega-strong protection magic.

Protective Wreaths for Your Door:

Hanging a wreath on your door is not only an iconic winter decoration, it’s also a useful tool as a protective ward.

  • Wreaths made from pine or fir will provide the most protection.

  • Including holly boughs, pinecones, and cinnamon sticks will magnify the protective magic and really help to ward off evil and bad vibes (and they’re such a classic look for holiday décor).

  • Including bells in your wreath will also ward off evil – bells are said to ring when evil is near, and hanging bells on or near your door will deter evil spirits.

Now that you’re well-equipped with some very simple ways to protect yourself and your home this winter, it brings me much pleasure to wish you all a very happy holiday season. Wishing you all safety, good health, and every bit of happiness!
